VAPA
Visual And Performing Arts
at Lafayette Park
Developing a love for creativity.
The VAPA program at LFP brings the arts into the classroom consistent with our constructivist model.
Typically, there are two full theater and choir productions each year, a fall play and a spring musical, and a winter and spring choir concert which have been performed at LFP and outside performance spaces.
Visual Arts
The visual arts program is vertically aligned in grades 8-12 so students are learning new tools and techniques each year. We work with a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, pastel, and animation. Students participate in field trips to local museums and studios.
Theater Arts
The entire 9th grade performs Romeo & Juliet as a class final after extensive study of the Shakespeare play and this period in history.
Poetry Slam
Larchmont has a robust poetry program beginning in 9th grade when all students participate in a spoken word, poetry section of their English classes. LFP’s Poetry Slam team (part of the Get Lit program) has become a force to be reckoned with. The team competes each year and has gone to the finals for the past three years - placing first at the middle school level and second at the high school level in what's been dubbed the largest youth poetry competition in the world.
Music
The choir has been one of the most popular programs at Larchmont with students performing in two major concerts a year and numerous other smaller performances. The music selected is intentional in how it weaves in the school mission and timely topics of the day. Students perform musical pieces that represent the diversity in our communities. The Caroling Choir performs diverse songs throughout the city during the holidays. Choir field trips include trips to the LA Opera and LA Philharmonic to focus on musical theory.
